RICHARD PRYOR RETURNS TO THE TONIGHT SHOW
Some television interviews become memorable because of the guest.
Others become memorable because of the chemistry between the guest and the host.
When Richard Pryor appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson on July 27, 1979, viewers got both.
The episode featured Richard Pryor alongside Patti D'Arbanville and professional tennis player Roscoe Tanner.
Johnny Carson hosted the program, which was broadcast by NBC.
For fans of classic comedy, the appearance is a great example of Pryor's ability to turn a television conversation into entertainment.
RICHARD PRYOR AND JOHNNY CARSON
Johnny Carson was one of the most important television hosts of his generation.
His relaxed interview style allowed guests to tell stories instead of simply answering short questions.
That worked especially well with Richard Pryor.
Pryor was a natural storyteller.
Give him a simple question and he could take the conversation somewhere completely unexpected.
He could describe a situation, imitate another person, change his voice, and build an entire comedy scene from a single idea.
Carson knew how to let that happen.
