RICHARD PRYOR, A GALACTIC BAR, STRANGE CUSTOMERS, AND ONE OF THE MOST CREATIVE SKETCHES FROM 1970s TELEVISION!
In 1977, Richard Pryor brought his unique comedy style to NBC with The Richard Pryor Show.
The short-lived variety series gave Pryor the freedom to create unusual characters and explore comedy in ways that were very different from a traditional stand-up performance.
One of the most memorable sketches was “Star Wars Bar.”
The sketch appeared in the show's premiere episode on September 13, 1977, only months after Star Wars had become a cultural phenomenon.
Pryor plays a bartender working in a strange futuristic bar filled with unusual customers.
The result is a hilarious combination of science-fiction parody and classic Richard Pryor character comedy.
1. A GALACTIC BAR WITH A RICHARD PRYOR TWIST
A Completely Different Kind of Workplace: The basic idea is wonderfully simple.
Richard Pryor works behind the bar.
The customers, however, are anything but ordinary.
Instead of familiar neighborhood regulars, the bar is filled with bizarre creatures inspired by the strange universe introduced in Star Wars.
Pryor's character treats the situation like another day at work....
