THIS IS THE FUNNIEST 10 MINUTES EVER BROADCAST ON AMERICAN TELEVISION
February 10, 1973. A date that comedy nerds still talk about. A night when Don Rickles walked onto The Tonight Show stage and turned a standard guest appearance into an absolute clinic on how to destroy a room.
If you think modern roasts are brutal, you have never seen Rickles in his prime.
The man was a comedy hurricane.
And Johnny Carson? He was the willing victim.
Let me explain why this specific clip keeps resurfacing decades later and why it still gets millions of views.
THE BUILD-UP: WHY EVERYONE KNEW THIS WOULD BE CHAOS
Don Rickles was never a "normal" guest.
He was the guest that producers feared and audiences adored.
By 1973, Rickles had already earned the nickname "The Merchant of Venom."
His entire act was built on insulting people.
Not gently teasing them.
Absolutely demolishing them.
But here is the genius part.
He did it with such charm and timing that the victims laughed harder than anyone else.
Johnny Carson knew exactly what he was getting into.
Watch the opening seconds of this clip.
Carson introduces Rickles with a smile that says "I have made a terrible mistake."
The audience is already electric...
