HE CALLED HER A HOCKEY PUCK AND SHE THANKED HIM FOR IT
Don Rickles never met a microphone he could not turn into a weapon. In May of 1992, a young Katie Couric sat down with the man the world knew as the Merchant of Venom. She came prepared with soft questions about Frank Sinatra, the Rat Pack, and a career that stretched all the way back to the smoky lounges of Miami Beach. What she got instead was a masterclass in affectionate destruction. The clip still gets passed around today because it captures something television has almost completely forgotten how to do. It lets a legend be genuinely dangerous for ninety seconds.
THE SETUP LOOKED COMPLETELY INNOCENT
The interview began like every other celebrity sit-down of that era. Polite questions, soft lighting, a nervous producer standing just outside the frame. Rickles answered the first question like a perfect gentleman, which should have been the only warning anyone needed. Then he leaned forward, looked Couric in the eye, and quietly announced that the interview was already over. She laughed before she even understood what she was laughing at. That is the exact second the temperature of the room changed.
