YOU HAVE DANCED TO THIS SONG A HUNDRED TIMES — AND YOU STILL DON'T KNOW THE STORY.
Most people hear the first four bars of More Than A Woman and their shoulders move before their brain catches up. That is not an accident. That is three brothers from Manchester, a borrowed French château, a deadline nobody thought they could meet, and one of the strangest creative sprints in pop history. This is the story behind the song that turned a disco soundtrack into a cultural earthquake. And it starts with a phone call.
THE WEEKEND THAT BROKE THE MUSIC BUSINESS
In early 1977, the Bee Gees were in France recording at the Château d'Hérouville, a studio so eccentric that the Rolling Stones, Elton John and David Bowie had all passed through its doors. Then the phone rang. Robert Stigwood, their manager and the producer behind Saturday Night Fever, needed songs for a small film about a Brooklyn kid who lived for Saturday nights. By their own account, Barry, Robin and Maurice wrote five of them in a single weekend. Barry Gibb has described those sessions as a blur of fear and adrenaline, and you can hear both in the finished record. No committee. No focus group. No time....
