HE WALKED OUT SMILING AND THEN ABSOLUTELY TORCHED EVERYONE IN THE ROOM.
Don Rickles was not a comedian who waited for permission to be funny.
He walked onto the Late Show set in 2002 like he owned the building and David Letterman was just a guest in his living room.
From the very first second Rickles sat down, the energy changed.
The audience knew something dangerous was about to happen.
And they were right.
THE MASTER OF INSULT COMEDY NEVER NEEDED A SCRIPT.
Rickles built his entire career on one simple idea.
Say the most offensive thing possible with the warmest smile imaginable.
In 2002 he was already in his seventies and still sharper than most comedians half his age.
Letterman introduced him like a legend and Rickles immediately started mocking his suit, his face and his entire television career.
The audience erupted.
Letterman could only sit there and take it because that was the only option.
EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THAT STUDIO BECAME A TARGET.
What made this appearance so special was the sheer speed of the jokes.
Rickles did not pause for applause.
He did not wait for the laughter to die down.
He kept firing one insult after another like a machine gun loaded with pure comedy....
