THIS IS THE GREATEST COMEDY ROAST HOLLYWOOD EVER SURVIVED.
Don Rickles was not just a comedian.
He was a force of nature who turned insults into an art form.
When the American Film Institute honored him with a lifetime achievement tribute, everyone knew exactly what was coming.
Pure unfiltered comedic destruction.
The stage was packed with Hollywood royalty.
Clint Eastwood.
Bob Newhart.
The brightest stars in the entertainment industry sat in elegant tuxedos and designer gowns.
They all came to celebrate a man whose entire career was built on making people hilariously uncomfortable.
And Don Rickles did exactly what he was born to do.
THE MAN WHO MADE INSULTS FEEL LIKE A HUG.
Most comedians spend their entire careers trying to be liked.
Don Rickles spent his career calling you a hockey puck and somehow made you love him for it.
That was his genius.
The AFI tribute was a fascinating contradiction.
Here was one of America’s most prestigious cultural institutions.
They were giving a dignified lifetime achievement award to a man who once told Frank Sinatra to “make yourself at home, hit somebody.”
The irony was not lost on anyone in the room.
Especially not on Rickles...
