Ethan stood in the middle of the living room with the phone pressed against his ear.
He could hear the supervisor breathing on the other end.
For several seconds, neither man spoke.
Then Ethan finally whispered.
“What kind of condition?”
“I am not a doctor, Mr Miller.”
“Then tell me what the report says.”
“I cannot discuss another employee's medical information over the phone.”
“You just told me it could be life-threatening.”
“I thought you should know.”
“Where is my wife?”
“She is still at the office.”
“Is she okay?”
“Yes.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
For the second time that day, he felt relief and terror at the same time.
“I am coming.”
He grabbed his keys.
Then he stopped.
A strange thought crossed his mind.
The accident from the original timeline had changed.
Claire had survived the factory.
The new job had changed.
And now there was a medical report that had never existed in the future Ethan remembered.
He suddenly realized that every change he made was creating new possibilities.
The future was no longer a road.
It was becoming a maze.
Ethan drove downtown....
